Today the 2014 Emmy nominations were announced. While Netflix may be the rookie of the TV networks it’s clearly making its presence known. Netflix made history last year as the first online network to be nominated for the award. In 2013 Netflix earned 14 nominations, this year Netflix more than doubled that with 31 nominations, 15 of which in the top categories. Netflix is clearly a force to be reconed with.

Nominations for House of Cards include:

  • OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES – Robin Wright as Claire Underwood
  • OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES – Kevin Spacey as Frank Underwood
  • OUTSTANDING GUEST ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES – Kate Mara as Zoe Barnes
  • OUTSTANDING GUEST ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES – Reg E. Cathey as Freddy
  • OUTSTANDING WRITING FOR A DRAMA SERIES – Beau Willimon
  • OUTSTANDING DIRECTING FOR A DRAMA SERIES – Carl Franklin
  • OUTSTANDING DRAMA SERIES – Netflix

Nominations for Orange is the New Black include:

  • OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES – Taylor Schilling as Piper Chapman
  • OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES – Kate Mulgrew as Red
  • OUTSTANDING GUEST ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES – Natasha Lyonne as Nicky Nichols, Laverne Cox as Sophia Burset & Uzo Aduba as Suzanne ‘Crazy Eyes’ Warren
  • OUTSTANDING WRITING FOR A COMEDY SERIES – Liz Friedman & Jenji Kohan
  • OUTSTANDING DIRECTING FOR A COMEDY SERIES – Jodie Foster
  • OUTSTANDING COMEDY SERIES – Netflix

I can’t say I’m surprised by the number of nominations either of these shows received, as I do think they’re well deserved. However one thing that did surprise me, and pleased me, was that 3 actresses from Orange is the New Black were nominated in the same category, Outstanding Guest Actress. The nominations recognized just some of the members of the incredibly talented and diverse cast of Orange is the New Black. The unique characters and skilled actors on this series are truly what make it a standout. Who do you think will take home the Emmy on August 25th?
